HOCKNEY'S ALPHABET

DAVID HOCKNEY, STEPHEN SPENDER, ET AL.

I picked this book up recently at Pegasus Books in Berkeley. Produced in 1991 to benefit the AIDS Crisis Trust, it features a big-name cast (Martin Amis, Susan Sontag, Iris Murdoch, Ian McEwan, Ted Hughes, etc., etc.), each of whom was charged with writing a small piece on a given letter of the alphabet. The essays are by turns charming or sad or funny, but the real star of the show is David Hockney's drawings: one for each letter. I'm busy making color copies of these great drawings to frame up as alphabet cards for our little one's nursery, and I hope she'll always think of the letter "L" as being green and stripey because of it.

  1. I just discovered your blog via Abbey Goes Design Scouting (http://gogoabigail.com/blog/) and I love it!

Books, bookshelves, libraries, bookstores... It's like heaven. Not the mention the fact that your minimalist aesthetic appeals to the designer in me.

    Well done sir, well done.
