BROADSHEETS
JACK B. YEATS
While on the subject of W.B. Yeats (see below), it's worth noting that he wasn't the only great artist in his family. His brother Jack is a noted painter and illustrator. I recently came across these broad sheets he designed in 1902 for Elkin Mathews. A broadsheet (or broadside) is essentially a one page book, posted in public places, and usually consisting of poetry, pictures, news or satire. The practice of putting up broadsheets is centuries-old, but fell out of usage when newspapers became widespread and readily available, though they experienced a counter-culture resurgence in the 1960's. An excellent collection of old broadsheets can be found here. Jack Yeats' broadsheets are collected here.
