THE GREENWICH VILLAGE BOOKSHOP DOOR
Among the many remarkable artifacts held by UT Austin's Harry Ransom Center is this door, once of Frank Shay's legendary bookshop in New York's Greenwich Village. They've used this piece as the center of an incredibly thorough and enjoyable online exploration of the people, place and times surrounding the bookshop, which survived as a bohemian center of literary activity between 1920 and 1925. During its brief life anyone of note who passed through the bookshop signed this door, and, in what was surely a massive undertaking, you can now click on any of the signatures to learn more about the person who left it. And that's really just the tip of the iceberg. Take a look around.
