READING FURNITURE

BASSAMFELLOWS

Channeling Poul Kjærholm by way of Børge Mogensen (with a little bit of Eames thrown in for good measure), BassamFellows make furniture in a great modern tradition, though any of it would look right at home in the most traditional library. Long available only through a small handful of showrooms around the world, a fuller selection of BassamFellows will soon be available (via special order) from DWR.

MK SYSTEM

MOGENS KOCH

The library systems of Danish designers like Mogens Koch achieve an almost weightless modular wooden cabinetry by making the walls as thin as possible. The cabinets lose very little by way of strength because they are made of solid wood and dovetail joined. This is consummate Danish craftsmanship, still executed with exacting detail in the beautiful Rud. Rasmussen workshop. The boxes of the Koch system can stack on top of and beside each other without looking bulky or clumsy because the total thickness of two sides placed together is still amazingly thin. Also remarkably thin are the company's profit margins (craftsmen this good don't come cheap), meaning no overseas dealerships for now. You'll just have to visit the charming showroom next time you're in Copenhagen. (Poul and Hanne Kjaerholm's library, with MK shelving, shown above.)

BOOKSHELVES

REOL MODULAR BOOKCASE

This prototype modular bookcase by Poul Kjaerholm is pretty ingenious. It appears to allow the addition of depth at random, as well as width and height, though he'd likely disapprove of anything other than this perfect configuration.  R 20th Century produced a tiny number of these shelves for their exhibition of Kjaerholm designs in 2008, but if you're really good, you may be able to make your own from the blueprint above.
